Monte Chaos’ Casino Spring Tournament 2020 Rules & Guidance
Important Dates:
Signups: Feb 7 - March 15 (Closes Midnight PST)
Swiss - Dates for Swiss (6 weeks of swiss rounds): Tuesday March 17 - Monday April 27.
Last Chance Qualifier and Play-ins: Between Tuesday April 28 and Friday May 8, time-slot determined by best fit for player availability.
Brackets: 16 person brackets for 4 weeks, Tuesday May 19 - June 16.
Flags:
There will be 5 sets of flags used for swiss which vary only slightly, in that one incentive location differs for each week. Four of them involve a “rotating incentive” where one incentive location changes between Earth Cave, Volcano, Sea Shrine, and Sky Palace.
Which order these are in is NOT determined in advance. At the beginning of each week (when that week’s match-ups are announced) an element that has not yet been chosen is randomly determined and that element’s dungeon will be used for that week. An element that is chosen is removed from the pool of possibilities until all elements have been chosen.
The general incentive setup for these flags is Free ship, but loose Canal. 2 additional key items will be loose. The final week of Swiss will be the “Chaos” round - no elemental dungeons will be incentivized, leaving a 4th key item loose.
The flags for the Last Chance Qualifier and the Play In Race will also choose a random elemental dungeon, following the same rules where a chosen element is removed from the pool.
Drafting your party with your opponent is required instead of optional.
Format:
Swiss Rounds:
Swiss pairings will be random among players with the same standing.
A player will not be required to face the same opponent twice in the swiss rounds.
A player may be “paired up” or “paired down” in certain circumstances
A player will not be paired up or paired down twice, unless there is no other eligible opponent for them.
In the case of an odd number of players with a given ranking, one player will be paired up or down; an entrant may only be paired up once, barring exceptional circumstances.
In Swiss, the players will do a party draft, unless either player expresses an opposition to party draft before the draft happens, in which case both players will have open party choice.
If players decline to party draft, they each construct a party of any combination of characters, including any Nones they wish to take.
There will be 5 or 6 weeks of swiss, depending on if there are more or less than 52 players enrolled.
LCQ and Play-in Race:
As mentioned, the flags for the Last Chance Qualifier and the Playin Race will also choose a random elemental dungeon.
No party draft will be held; all racers will be given open party selection.
Players with 2 losses after completing all swiss rounds will qualify for the play-in race.
Players with 3 losses after completing all swiss rounds will all compete in a last-chance qualifier. The first place finisher of this will qualify for the play-in race.
Brackets (and Qualifying for Brackets):
There will be a 16-player single elimination bracket.
Strength of Schedule (Bucholz) will be used for determining initial bracket seeding.
Bracket matches are Best of 3, with party draft mandatory.
Players who are at 0 or 1 losses after the swiss will immediately qualify for the brackets.
The top finishers of the play-in race will fill the remaining 16 player bracket.
The Class-Drafting Process:
In the swiss rounds, drafting order will be determined randomly. (coinflip or equivalent)
In the bracket round, the player with the higher seed may choose whether to be first pick or second pick in race #1. In races 2 and 3, the loser of the previous race may choose whether to be first pick or second pick.
Classes are chosen in a “snake draft” order -- the player who chooses first picks one class of their choice, then their opponent chooses two classes, and then the first player picks a final class. (1-2-2-1)
You can choose any Final Fantasy 1 class. Duplicates are allowed. “NONE” is only allowed as an option in draft if both players prior agree to allow drafting ‘none’s. (Please keep in mind that if you are being broadcasted, this may result in a party that goes well over the allotted schedule time, which could result in the broadcast ending before the race does.)
Both players must create their party with the chosen classes, in any starting order.
Drafting in the Swiss rounds is a voluntary process. Any player may choose to forgo drafting at any time before the draft starts, for any reason, without penalty. It will not be considered poor sportsmanship to decline to draft.
Pressuring your opponent into drafting or into selecting a particular party can be considered a violation of the CoC, especially if they have already declined. No agreement between racers about how to draft will be considered final until the actual draft process begins, and there will be no penalties for not holding to an external agreement.
Signups:
Please signup in advance of the first pairings announcement. No late sign-ups will be allowed. By signing up, you agree to be held to the Final Fantasy Randomizer Code of Conduct while engaged as a participant of this event. Violations of the Code of Conduct may result in consequences ranging from a warning to bans from the discord, the tournament, all further events; these consequences may extend to other communities as well.
Dropping/No Show Rules:
If you wish to drop from the tournament, you are free to do so at any time between finishing a scheduled race and having your next opponent announced.
If you are paired with another racer, please make every reasonable effort to complete your match with them. Should there be any reasons why you would not be able to complete your race in a given week, please contact an tournament organizer as soon as possible.
If a runner does not respond to their paired opponent, an admin should be notified after 24 hours, so that the admins can assist in the situation.
If a runner does not show up for a scheduled race and cannot be contacted, it will be considered a forfeit.
Game Rules:
All games will be run using SpeedRunsLive (SRL). You will be asked if you have an account when entering into the tournament; please make sure you do so. You may use a console or approved emulator to play. All races are blind. The winner will be determined by the SRL RaceBot’s timer, unless external technical difficulties are in place, or if the race is decided by 5 seconds or less. In either case, the runners may agree upon a race result. If they do not, an admin will re-time the runs by hand and determine the winner. In the event in which the margin of victory is less than one second, the race will be determined to be a draw. In the case that the draw happens during the LCQ, the Play-in Race, or in Brackets, a tiebreaker race will be played between all drawn participants. The tiebreaker race will use the same flagset, but with a different random seed.
At any time, a runner may choose to Directly Message a designated tournament official to request a reroll. If all runners do this, a reroll will be declared.
No cheating is allowed in the tournament. This includes, but is not limited to: using any external programs to analyze a ROM, looking at your competitor’s stream or chat, looking at the restream or the restream chat, or hacking the ROM to give yourself any sort of advantage. Any cheating discovered will result in penalties ranging from a time penalty, forfeit of the race, or instant disqualification from the tournament. Additionally, bans on participation in future FF1r events or events organized by other communities may be sanctioned depending on the nature of the offense.
You are welcome to use your chat during the race, but you must take active steps to avoid seeing spoilers and backseating. A strong moderation team who can quickly delete inappropriate comments is highly recommended. If you are unsure if your chat or your mod team, we highly recommend that you keep your chat closed or on emote only mode.
In the event that you accidentally forfeit, please reenter within 60 seconds of the forfeit. If the 60 seconds elapse, your forfeit will be considered official and you will lose the race in question. If somebody has a technical issue that results in a forfeit, opponents may choose to accept the result (upon completing the seed) or may request a rematch. If one opponent wishes to accept the result, the result stands. It will not be considered poor sportsmanship to accept the result.
Any spoilers in SRL chat between the start and end of the race may result in penalties at the tournament organizers’ discretion. These penalties may range from a warning to disqualification from this and future tournaments. Please redirect all commentary about a seed while the race is still in progress to the appropriate discord channel, and please save all .comment commands for after the race is done. If you are not directly involved in the race, do not type anything in the SRL room until the race is finished, and non-runners should only use the channel for required business (such as adjusting on-stream timers or declaring a reseed).
Catchall Clause:
Any situation not explicitly handled by the rules will be dealt with on a case by case basis by the Tournament Staff, Admin, and Arbiter teams.
Stream Delay for Brackets:
The time you submit on the tournament portal is when you, the players, begin racing.
Set your stream delay for 900 seconds. We suggest creating a separate profile in OBS for this.
45 minutes before the race begins at the submitted time, Tournament Staff will open your race room channel on SRL.
20 minutes before your race begins at the submitted time, you should start streaming, on a Final Fantasy blue screen.
10 minutes before your race begins at the submitted time, the seed will be generated.
At the submitted time, your race will begin.
15 minutes after your submitted time, commentators and audience will see your race begin.
